In Which a Floor is Repaired
Before we get too far with smoothing out any scraping accidents, damage from the previous occupants needs to be repaired. In the Master Bedroom, this is limited to a few rows of bad pulled nails. In some spots, the nails were driven in at an angle and then pulled at the opposite angle, tearing out the maximum amount of wood as possible. We can only assume this was done during re-carpeting by one of the previous owners and covered up by subsequent carpet pad and new carpet. It's a real shame because most of the floor is in such good shape.
For most of the damage, I used plugs cut from the red room patch area and some new oak planks I bought from the BORG. On some of the nail removal damage, I used poplar dowels carved to fit and glued horizontally into the hole. As a whole, it turned out really well, but there are some lessons I only learned late in the process that would have improved things.
When using forstner bits, you have to make sure the center-pin is in material, or the bit can wander and cause extra damage. I knew this but tried to drill out deep gouges and holes anyway, and there a few places where I ended up having to go up a size in plug to hide damage I caused.
